English Walnut resawn by hand

American Black Walnut centre strip (Don't ask!)

Does it look like a Jazz/Rock/Blues guitar to you?

@eddie6string It looks stunning already Eddie. You have a good eye for woods and I’ve positive you will do the same with the neck and fretboard.

For me, it says Blues. 💙🎸

That looks like a beautiful piece of timber @eddie6string.  How long have you been looking after that?

@tv1

Yep it sure is!

I helped Chris Eccleshall move workshop about three times and it was always knocking about,  so I'm guessing 18yrs or so.

He did a nice carve top from the same chunk - now it's my go! (Silent screams of Heeeeelp!!!!)

@eddie6string

I really like it better now that you’ve added that center strip!

Practice on scrap...

Thanks @mattbeels

Happy accident

Got some Snipe from planer and lost some width, so added strips.

Cut some Brazilian Mahogany today for Neck and back.

Tempted to do body similar to LP junior for thickness as this would be easier, but that walnut is crying out for carving - Waddayafink?

Hmm @eddie6string

I typically like a slab body for the LPJ style guitars but a carve on yours seems appropriate. It’ll look very classy with that center strip, plus a carve is more comfortable to play imo.

Have fun!

If you've got enough thickness in the wood, then I always think that a carve looks "nicer" somehow.  More finished.  It doesn't have to be a full body carve, you could do a small "shelf" around the edge?

🤔

Here's something else that I tried as an experiment on a recent build ...

I placed some Cobola next to the body and it looks too busy to my eye - I'm thinking ebony fretboard would let the body shine?

American Black Walnut centre strip (Don't ask!)

Whatever the reason for the modification you have ended up with a stunning body blank! Walnut is usually very nice to carve but if you may experience odd grain direction due to the figuring then I’d just go for the slab body, it’s pretty enough as it is, especially with the carefully designed centre stripe!
