I'm new to the site, but have a couple of builds on the go... have made several mistakes on the way, on previous builds, and these ones, but have been able to recover.

Building necks are the bane of my existence, but I am determined to get it right.

Here is what I'm working on right now - a LP Jr double cut, single P90 planned... just a rock and roll machine...

Today, I got the truss rod slot cut, and in, and slotted the fingerboard... notice my lack of order of process... blanks first, fretboard second, neck third etc... I actually started carving this neck before I slotted for the truss rod etc...  that's my fret slot jig that I created to cut the fret slots...

Tonight (pending the number of pints consumed), I may cut the fretboard to shape, and radius it, and glue it to the neck...

Cheers, mates!

Hi Jaxty, you're doing well there. I used a Bailyley pre slotted and radiused fretboard for mr first build, and iv'e got another one for my next build. What do you use to radius your fretboards?

@robin Thanks!  Feels like good progress!  I have a radius sanding block that I will use.

Most certainly, a pre-slotted board would have saved me some time and a lot of effort!  I just needed to be able to do this myself, to check it off a list of things I can accomplish.  It also forced me into building a jig for myself as well, which required some ingenuity!  Always nice to engage my brain at times!!

@jaxty

I just needed to be able to do this myself

I like to do things for myself too and I've  really enjoyed make jigs and tools. But for fretboards, I don't have any suitable wood to make blanks from, so makes sense for me to buy Mark's pre made ones.

@robin I am somewhat lucky that I have a local source (within 50km) that has body blanks, neck blanks and fingerboard blanks available.  I will eventually get back to purchasing pre-made, however, as it is so much more convenient.

@tv101It is... I call it "therapy"... I also realized I could have much better tools (i.e. the rasp that Mark uses in his videos... ), that would make my task easier and quicker...

@clinton Thanks!  I've always wanted a simple guitar, with a single P90... I think this is it!

@jaxty Welcome to the site and forum. Neck making has become my favourite part of building guitars. My first attempt was ok but I wanted to become more proficient at it as it always felt like the most difficult part and a weak spot for me. I decided the only way I was going to get better at it was to make more and more of them. I made one neck after the other and now it becoming second nature. I recognised it as a weakness, saw an opportunity to improve and turned it into a strength by repetition. My next challenge is soldering! Ahhhhhhhhhh........

Your current build is looking good and you are correct when you say things would go a lot smoother with a structured method of construction. I’ve done Mark’s online course a few years ago and I’ve applied all of those methods and practices into all of my guitar builds since. It’s all step by step and states everything very clearly, it’s the best thing I’ve ever done online.

Keep us up to date with your build and we can all help along the way.

Make guitars, not war 🌍✌️🎸

@boo Thanks for the welcome!  I will likely sign up as a supporter and follow Mark's courses!  I'm watching the live sessions through, and I really love Mark's no BS, anyone can do this attitude and demeanor.  I've built several necks now, and this is the first that I can really be proud of to this point.  It started out a mess, and I recovered... I won't even mention how I cut out the truss rod slot (after I had cut out the neck shape).  I have a lot to go, but am learning!

Cheers!

Was able to get my fretboard radiused accurately (thanks for the tips!), the neck carve completed, and frets in yesterday.  Good progress.  On to the body routes next.

a LP Jr double cut, single P90 planned... just a rock and roll machine...

Oh yes. I want one. I WILL have one.

You have to work for the tone, but it's worth it.

Pure overdriven sleaze. You have to work that volume control.

Looking forward to see the finished result!

That'd be a great place to start your guitar-making journey ...

I think I've posted a few pics of my various LP Jr types, though most are single cut rather than the (better!) double cut version.
