I guess "Other Instruments" is the right place for this?

It's not going to have any strings - at all - but it will be used in the making of noise.

I bought the kit last year, during lockdown #1, but never got round to making it.

At least I've now got as far as unpacking it.

Can you see what it is yet?

@tv101 It’s an effects pedal, something I keep meaning to have a go at.

There we go - it's basically done now.

😆

I've just slotted the components into the appropriate (I hope) spot on the circuit.  Sort of the equivalent of "dry clamping".  None of the soldering is done yet!!

But I had a problem with some of the resistors (hence the gaps on the board).  Some are 1k, and some are 10k.

1k is denoted by brown-black-red-brown.

10k is denoted by brown-black-orange-brown.

It wasn't easy spotting which was which!  Done now though, so I can finish the rest of the "dry clamping" tomorrow, and maybe get the soldering iron hot.

@tv101 Oh, I know, it’s a new toaster. Your wife told you she wanted a new one and you thought you would make one. Good job man, it looks great! 🤣

This is the kit - "Eagle Claw Overdrive".

If anyone's thinking about building pedals, FuzzDog are *great*.

Although I love pedals I’ve never been all that keen on wiring and electrical work.

Even though I love electric guitars and work as a tech, wiring just ain’t my thing.
Over the years as I’ve learned how to solve problems and have become more adept at it, I do dislike it less but I don’t know if I’ll get around to building pedal kits anytime soon, but you never know.

It does sound fun somehow but I think for me soldering onto the circuit board is what would drive me up the wall. I get too impatient with the really small and fiddly bits.

How do they sound though? As good as a Boss or Electro Harmonix?

Practice on scrap...

@mattbeels If all else fails Matt, you could always use a Birmingham screwdriver. 😉

@mattbeels

I actually started these kits just last year.  I know nothing about electrickery and electrickeryonics, other than it's all trickery magic.

Resistors and diodes and capacitors and chips and stuff.  What???

So, I bought myself a book (I admit, it had "Dummies" in the title) and started looking at the pictures reading it to try to understand some basics, and then I bought a FuzzDog kit (an amp kit as it happens) to see if I could understand it practically as well as bookily.

The amp kit worked out well.  This pedal is a level or two on from the amp kit though.  It's got a LOAD more components.  And they all have to go in the right places!!

I know most people go through this phase at age 8 or 9, but I missed that, so I'm trying to catch up a bit now.

Plus, soldering these is good practice for soldering a guitar's controls.  If you can get all these components done properly, then the odd guitar pot is EASY!

How do they sound though? As good as a Boss or Electro Harmonix?

I wouldn't/couldn't really judge or compare.  I don't do them to make something "better" - it's just for the fun of doing something that's slightly out of my comfort zone.

Before I started building guitars I used to do the odd pedal I even got to etching my own PCB’s...it’s around that time that I realise I was absolutely sh1t at soldering and still am...worst part of guitar building.

the easiest build is an A/B switch and comes in handy live especial running two guitars to the Sam amp for quick changes.

I have too many guitars...said no one in the world..ever!

@deej

Fyi, that etching solution is good for relicing guitar parts if you’re ever so inclined. Personally I’m not but relicing does have it’s place in the repair/replacement part world. That and/or muriatic acid.

@tv101 I wonder what that casing would look like painted in metal flake and candy paint? 😉
