As long as the 'Zero Fret' is not lower than the first fret it will be OK.

Hey Herb - Standard practice if going for a refret would be to also replace the zero fret with a slightly higher fret. You could use the same fret wire but just level from the first fret onwards.

I made the fingerboard too thin - over 7mm Did you mean too thick? Cutting a fretboard like that deserves some HERO Points!
