I have access to a pillar drill at work but I’m on leave this week so I used a step drill bit in a hand held drill. This worked pretty well for preventing tear out and the other 5 holes… Read more»

Thanks everyone. One corner of the tuner was right on the edge – not enough to stop it working or really be seen from the front (so not worth putting in dowel and re-drilling) but it would annoy me every… Read more»

Remember my total balls up carving a neck few weeks ago? Well “take two” turned out a bit better (though not 100%)
I went a bit chicken so it’s 22mm thick at F1 and 24.5mm at F12… Read more»

I say keep going too Dave – as long as you can’t hook a finger nail underneath the frets or see the gap (without tools borrowed from NASA) then “job’s a good un” 🙂
That neck looks great.

Thanks Matt I heard Mark call it “sucky sweet” when referring to guitars with high gloss – clear laquer finish in a video (don’t ask me which one) and it made me laugh. I really like stains that show off… Read more»

Thanks Mark It’s from the competition I’m afraid; Crimson water based stain, penetrating oil, then a layer of carnauba wax. The neck was taken to 1500 grit then oiled using 2000 grit paper and it’s like butter. My spray booth… Read more»

After myhowling balls up with that neck the other week, I wanted something to do whilst waiting for replacement wood so I decided to revisit the first guitar I made. It started life as single humbucker/volume pot only with an… Read more»

What they said above … (though I suppose some plumbers ptfe tape around the threads would tighten things up but that’s definitely a bodge) As an aside for any non-kit builds, knowing your pot dimensions is also important for knob… Read more»

Thanks TV1 🙂
The fretboard still has plenty of meat on it, so trying removal might be worth a shot. Hadn’t leveled yet so no time lost there thankfully.
Will save it for a rainy/bored day mini project though I think… -

On my only 100% successful & playable build, which has bolt on ‘strat’ style neck; the pocket is 18mm, neck is 26mm at heel (20mm neck – 6mm fretboard with 16″ radius) and has low profile/top load hard tail bridge…. Read more»

Feel your pain there too Eddie. I think I’ve managed to burn through on every guitar I’ve sprayed clear coat on (the joys of only having a back garden for a workshop and using rattle cans). The solution (for me)… Read more»

Thanks everyone. I’m sure I could effect a cosmetic repair … I guess doing it in a way that doesn’t self-destruct on the first turn of the truss rod will be the key. I use the same template for my… Read more»
