I finally got around to testing out my new metal flake gun on a Strat body. I used a black ground coat, then a transparent carrier/base coat, dry flake and 2K clear coat. I used three different guns, a base coat gun with a 1.8 cap, a Flake King 1000 Flake Gun and a 1.3 cap clear coat gun (Devilbiss). I think it came out OK for my first time using dry flake. I hope the sun is shining tomorrow so I can get some better pictures and video. It’s actually quite difficult to photograph, my auto focus was all over the place. 😂

Looks like it turned out great, good job!
@mattbeels Thanks man. I’ll see how it sands flat, I may flow coat it yet. I’m excited to get some candy on it, that’s when it will come alive. Only then will I have made it *ucking sparkle! 🤘😁🤘🎸✨✨✨✨✨

Looking good are you trained as a spray painter
@rocknroller912 Thanks man. Yeah I went to college to learn the basics, then worked as an apprentice paint sprayer in auto body industry before setting up on my own. Most of my work was done for car traders but I had lots of other interesting stuff too, including some restoration work. I gave it all up when I moved area to live with my wife. I still have all the gear though and I’m getting back into it now I am making a steady supply of guitars. I am also getting into airbrushing and have just bought a load of gear, I’ll be using it to apply candy paint to this guitar body when it’s all prepped. This silver metal flake is just the first stage.

Yes, much better Marc Bolan than Gary Glitter!!!
@darrenking 🤣🤣 Yeah, if anything, please use Marc Bolan, not the other one. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Awesome paint job Boo! Talk about making it shiny!! Are the flakes applied with static attraction? I'm just trying to work out how you spray a solid!
@darrenking I’ve just made a short video on how I did it, I’m just uploading it to YouTube. I’ll post it here when it’s ready.

@darrenking Here you go Darren, just for you. Obviously all the prep work had been done in the usual way, from substrate to ground coat colour. This video just covers the next step, shooting the metal flake and is just a short description and overview of the process.

You could get bombarded with requests to do custom spray jobs now that you have shown your skills. I also wondered if the metal flakes would have any kind of electrical shielding effect. Could you test the finish with a meter and see if there is a reading.
Some people call me a tool, others are less complimentary. Tools being useful things.
