Just a reminder for those of you with compressors and those thinking of investing in one. Regular maintenance is essential, such as draining the tank of water collection, cleaning air filters, changing oil etc. It all adds up to a healthier, safer compressor that will last you much longer if you look after it.

There are a few horror stories online about compressors exploding, literally. Here is one account of it happening, he was lucky.

A good reminder @boo

Reminded me that I’ve never done any maintenance at all.
😲 😲

So I went straight out to my workshop this afternoon to get that sorted out.

And then I remembered that I don’t have a compressor.

Djeez thanks @Boo It is important to realize how dangerous tools can be, even if the chance of them causing damage is minimal.

@koendb Yeah, this is a rare freak accident but it can happen. I think it’s a case of not just buying the cheapest compressor our there, as the steel used to construct them will be thinner than a more expensive one and will be more likely to fail. More variables are how often you maintain it. It’s advised to regularly drain the main tank of water build up, change the oil, clean/change the air filter etc. Having it in a weather proof box of its own, outside the workshop is good too; it always has fresh air intake and you can use an air fed breathing mask from it too. Keep it healthy.

I am guilty of breaking all of these rules and I’m not the only one but I plan on organising everything properly when I move house. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Time for a brand new compressor I think.

If I would buy one, I would at least look into the possibility to keep it in a purposely build construction at the outside of my workshop with all this information. I dont trust my own sense of responsibility and knowledge. I dont mind shattered glass or broken speakers, but I do care about other people being in the wrong place at the wrong time

@koendb Yeah me too, it’s the responsible thing to do.

Here is really good compressor maintenance video I’ve just found, it saves me making one.
