I finally dismantled one of these barrels today. Hammer and bar did the trick, it was quite easy. I just knocked off the metal bands/hoops (don’t know the technical term) and the thing just fell apart. A lot of the staves are quite saturated but some are dry, some are charred black and others are very clean. The are all top quality oak of varying widths but all are about 27mm thick. The top and bottom fell into several pieces but are about 40mm thick. They all need a thorough drying out before any processing/thicknessing etc and I’ll lose a bit of the thickness doing this but I think it will be worth it.
So maybe by the end of the year, it may be dry enough to use. 😆
It’s nice stuff but it is heavy.

Im not sure what was in it to be honest. It’s definitely alcoholic though, I can smell it, it’s like vinegar. What is that, acetic acid or something?
