I was just wondering what you all use to sand your work. What sander and sand paper do you use?
I’m not sure we have ever done any kind of comparison and rating of tools, materials and sundries before.
Most of the time I’ve always used pneumatic tools from my compressor. Recently though my big compressor has finally given up and is getting too dangerous to use. I will replace it but my money needs to be spent elsewhere right now.
A while ago I did buy a pneumatic Mirka orbital sander which is fantastic, so now I can’t use it until new compressor day arrives.
So……. I went and bought the electric version 😜
Used with a vacuum and the proper mesh sanding discs, it’s the best sander I have ever owned and very economical to run.
I’m not showing off, just contributing my thoughts and opinion of a tool anyone should consider if you want excellent quality. It’s not at all cheap and neither are the sanding discs but they last longer and so will the sander. Superb system.

Couldn't you have bought a half-decent replacement compressor for the cost of that Mirka kit??
It's still on my "on day I might justify it" list. In the meantime, I make do with the arm-powered rectangular hand-held unit with the dust hose connected into my old vacuum cleaner! It works. And abranet is so much easier to use than traditional sandpaper variants.

@tv101 No, not really. When I replace my big compressor, it will be around the £1k mark. The size of compressor I will need for all my air tools, means that “half decent” will just not cut it.
This sander was only a few hundred. The thing is, I’ve had the perfect justification to buy it. I’m doing the house up and it will be easier, more convenient and much more quiet to use all around the house, instead of the noise and inconvenience of having airline passed though doors and/or open windows.
Plus it means I can use it for guitar making in the future when I get time and show off a bit in the forum. 😆

@nsj Yeah I understand. I managed to get mine for £390 though so I was quite happy. It’s still a lot of money for a sander but not all sanders are made equal. 😆
I used to be a vehicle refinisher and I’ve used a lot of sanders over the years, mainly pneumatic ones but some electric ones too.
I have to say that Mirka are on it, they really are. It’s the whole system, not just the sander, it’s all so clean. It’s economical, it’s clean, it’s fast, it’s efficient and most of the time you don’t really need to wear a dust mask.
It’s fair enough using Aldi sanders or similar, crack on. 👍
I’m just glad I got an opportunity to justify buying a Mirka, I’ve been waiting a long time. 😁

Mask? Hasn't covid past now? 🤣
Tbh, I'd probably have a mirka in a flash if I had the money!
I have the Mirka roundy kit. It is still manual sanding, but you can hook it up to a vacuum cleaner and make your sanding work virtually dust free.
I am amazed how good it actually works and , while it is expensive for a sanding block, it is still a lot cheaper then the orbital sander and did I already mention it really really works? I can recommend it to anyone 🙂
Hmmmmm - tempting. Got a link
Errrrrrrmmmmm………. Sorry, I forgot to mention the VAT 😬
It’s still worth a look though as you get quite a few Abranet discs and hose with it.
”Oh well that’s alright then!” I hear you say. 🤣

@koendb Yeah, I’ve used a lot of stuff like that, all shapes and sizes, it’s all about keeping the dust down. Whether sanding car body filler or sanding wood, getting the dust into a vacuum instead of in the air and on the floor, is half the battle. A cleaner environment means you have more time working on the project instead of cleaning.
Are you using the Abranet discs with it?

Looks like you bought the last one at that price @Boo, with or without the Very Awful Tax.

Loving the look of this @koendb. 👍

Very Awful Tax.
Don’t get me started on VAT 😡 It should be scrapped.
If it were, it'd only have to be replaced with VVAT.
I'm VAT registered, but don't think this would quite qualify as a business expenditure - I'm in the wrong business!
