@russ

Silica gel is good in an enclosed space. I don’t keep original boxes as they are only bits of cardboard and I don’t see the point of being precious about stuff like that as it’s never going to be a collectors item.

I use plastic storage boxes as they are cheap, can be stacked and they have a good seal. I used to put my hand chisels in a cotton tool roll and found that anything capable of absorbing moisture will cause tools to rust. Cardboard boxes will attract damp and cause rust so I would ditch them.

It’s also important to clean dust from power tools after every use. It can get into the motor windings through the air vents and attract moisture. Also a serious fire hazard.

So I will say swim against the tide and go plastic.

Some people call me a tool, others are less complimentary. Tools being useful things.

Cheers @rocknroller912.

I meant to say that the power tools are in their original plastic cases.... not the cardboard box. Do you think they would be fine sitting on a shelf in their plastic case or should I put them into a drawer or cabinet as well.

🙏🎸🙂🎶

I think that plastic cases will be fine with silica gel if you’ve got it. I’ve been storing mine like that for years and don’t have any problems. The part most likely to rust is the Chuck, so you can rub some candle wax on the outside and into any screw heads. I’ve been working in an unseated garage for nearly 40 years so have learned everything the hard way.

if I manage to keep it tidy

One thing worth doing is to figure out which tools you use often and mount them to a board on the wall. I’m very limited on space here and can’t do that any more so everything is in a big tool box or other lidded “Really Useful” boxes, not very convenient!

It's well insulated and will soon be properly ventilated.

If that’s the case you shouldn’t need a dehumidifier should you?

When there is a will, there is a way! So happy for you @Russ. Ample space, top job on the workbenches. In due time you will make it truly your own and building your art. Just make sure to make time always keep it tidy and have a shop vac handy at all times. That is the only advice I can give you. Other than that, you got this! If you wish, step by step. I’ll time it with you and we can build a Bandsman at the same moment in time. Today actually is the 1 year anniversary of my Bandsman 6 string build and I made a pact to myself that I would build one every year. Although I did build a Bandsman bass but that does not count. Let me know when you are ready, I’ll build one with ya!

I'll give it a go but I might end up holding you back. I'm going to have a wee practice on some scrap wood with some of the shaping techniques before I start but I'll let you know when I get the main build started.

Cheers,

🙂🎶🙏🎸

@russ I think you’ll pick it up quicker than you think. It’s only natural to be anxious at first but you’ll soon get into it.

If I had unlimited wood then I could be a wee bit braver. When you see your bits of wood as precious gems it makes it a little more nerve wracking to cut it.

Still ..... I'll give it my best shot.

Congrats on the shed Russ.

My building life started out in a shed.  Can’t remember whether it was 8x6, or 10x8, but it was big enough.

At least until I started buying big tools to put in there!

I never had a problem with damp.  But then, it was a shed, it was hardly airtight, despite all the insulation.

I did keep batteries indoors through the winter.  I don’t think they like getting frozen.  And some of the oils, etc, for the same reason.

If the shed isn’t too far from a proper power source, then getting a proper feed in there is going to be so much easier.  Plenty of sockets in there too.
