I remember a time (when all this were fields) and my dad agreed to buy me my first guitar.

It was in Durham, and the local music shop has a selection of used guitars that I was looking at.

I was very fortunate that my old man agreed to a max budget of £200.

I went down to have a look and pick one.

There was a nice selection, to be sure. And I saw a really nice Ibanez Roadster II (1983) for £180. Then, out of the corner of my eye, I saw one of those Les Pauls that I'd heard about (I was 15 and just started playing). I enquired to the nice chap behind the counter and it was a 1973 LP Custom in Tobacco Sunburst with one previous owner and original in every way with very minimal wear. Price? £250. £50 over budget.

I went home and told my dad that I'd like the LP, and he said OK, but tomorrow.

Tomorrow came, and they'd sold it 1hr before I got there.

I need up with the Ibanez - which is very nice. But not a 1973 LP custom in Tobacco Sunburst for £250.

Never mind, I have a Bailey to look forward to.

At least you soon got over that near-miss @rashdown_online and haven't been thinking it about, in all the detail, ever since ...

I can donate these unopened Iron Gear pickups. Parchment covers so may not work but may be able to source new covers to match the guitar.

If those pickups are chosen then @boo can just paint them damn covers!

Practice on scrap...

THat's right, @TV1. Never crossed my mind that I could have had a wonderful LP Custom the same age as me.

Not bitter...

That’s very generous of you, we’ll throw them into the hat. The “debates” we will all have about what should be used where and why is going to be highly amusing I predict. 😂👍

I’ll leave the decision to you @boo and @markbailey but the offer was to help make as much for charity it would be best if you can source parts as cheap as possible or free.

Just shout if you need them and I’ll send to either of you.

@mattbeels This is an option @deej, same with a scratch plate, they can all be painted. I can use some flexible plastic primer before applying colour and clearcoat.

Anything anyone wants painting (outside of this project), just ask. It could be anything, anything that you thing paint will stick to, I can paint it. It doesn’t even have to be a guitar, it can be anything with an unlimited colour pallet. I have fine airbrushes as well as full size spray guns. Just ask. 👍

Is it wrong to move house just to have a garage so I can build a bench and use a router?

@rashdown_online It’s the ONLY reason to move house...

Please make the next question harder @rashdown_online ...

OK...

Why did chemical warfare get to the point where there's a global lock down meaning I can't get my Walnut guitar finished, collected and played?

😫

It's crap. I have a BNIB Triton router, a bunch of templates and various tools. But I also have a shitty flimsy shed with no solid floor or walls (or power).

We have a nice garden over looking them there fields and loads of countryside to use/abuse. So perfect for kids vs. lockdown - but not so for "hobbies".

Seriously @rashdown_online - if you've got the space to put up a decent shed, then dunsterhouse do a big range of buildings, many of which are suitable as workshops.

A decent base isn't hard to get sorted, and an electrician can always get power to an outbuilding.

That approach is probably a *bit* cheaper than moving house.

Think: Mid-Terrace (1780s stone cottage) backing on to locomotive tracks (turns out to be Cheltenham to Paddington line) at the back and locked in by Private land owner at the front.

Trust me, cheaper and less stressful to move than do all 3 of move+divorce+grieve.

do all 3 of move+divorce+grieve.

Having done divorce, it was both the most expensive, and most worthwhile, thing that I've done.

But I wouldn't want to do it again.
