Apart from playing in my own bands I get asked as a substitute (or temporary worker as I call it) bass player every now and then. Two years ago I was asked to do a gig with a band named "Pitch & The Swiffers". Their bass player, a 78 year old had lost his hearing over the years, so they needed a replacement for this gig. The band only plays instrumentals, mostly surf music and Shadows songs. Now I'm not really into that kind of music but I was asked by one of the guitar players (he plays the rhythm guitar) with who I played in the same football team when we were 11 year old boys. We also went to the same secondary school. His name is Hein De Kort and he's a very well known cartoonist in Holland. Makes cartoons and comic strips for newspapers and magazines.
This gig was at a local festival called "Rock Urbanus", formerly knowns as "Rock under the Urbanus clock". This name comes from the Saint Urban church (Urbanus being dutch for Urban) opposite to the venue where the festival is held.
We rehearsed 2 or 3 times and then went for it. Oh, and I had to buy a matching surf shirt.
