@russ so I mentioned to Mark about this and I need keep the headstock ācoreā over 13mm which makes sense, I think I might just surface route .5 to .8 mm off each side and then route the veneer down so the whole thing is about 15.5. Iāve modified the thickness jig to add stops which allow me to rout to a flat line for the back of the headstock too.Ā

@mattbeels pretty much but Iāll sand the veneer to roughly match the rough headstock profile. Suggestion from Mark is to drill an 8mm hole and ream it out to 10mm to remove chance of breakout. Donāt have a reamer so will see how much those are. Iāll probably route the veneer to thickness before drilling the holes though. If it all goes wrong then Iāll make a new neck from a pine and MDF laminate as Iāve no money left for another neck blank 🙂

Mark's knowledge is invaluable to us.
Couldnāt agree more @russ. For anyone whoās interested there is a lesson in the Acoustic course on laminating headstocks.Ā

Just watched that 2-3 weeks ago @tej. All good stuff. 👍😁Ā

Slow progress with life getting in the way of late. Neck now profiled with the router and Iāve put the back veneer on. The front one needs to wait until Iāve levelled everything for the fretboard.
I want really thinking straight when I put the veneer in, I meant to cut it at an angle as opposed to having if butt up against the mahogany flat. I think much of the side will get carved down later on.

@tej Looking slick. I like the look of the headstock laminate, itās different. I like different. Keep going. 👍

Indeed itāll be a little unorthodox but hopefully not to the point of just looking odd, either way itāll look better than the glaring look of two 10mm dowels in the headstock where the maker forgot how to use a rule 😂

@tejĀ
A big part of being a maker is how well you can get out of your mistakes, and you are managing it very well so good job. Everyone makes mistakes, the trick is to hide them. Iāve been watching the jewellery making challenge on tv and the judges said the same thing, itās how you fix problems that defines your skill level.
Some people call me a tool, others are less complimentary. Tools being useful things.
@rocknroller912 A fair point, have to say though itās frustrating where I have screwed up itās meant things have become more interesting and made me try things I wasnāt planning to at this stage.

Plans are great but they often donāt survive first contact with the wood because it has a grain that sometimes takes you where you donāt want to be. Thereās always the human factor of course but thatās part of the fun.

Got the fillet sorted, had to make a custom one to cover up where Iād routed the slot too wide. There are still two thin gaps where I screwed up the slot even wider but that shouldnāt be a problem. Unfortunately dug in with the plane near the headstock so also had to scrape a lot of it down. Itās come out ok though, fretboard goes on tomorrow all being well!

It all looks very neat even the bit you said is a mistake
@rocknroller912 thanks, did I say it was a mistake, theyāre erm, internal tone voids to create a resonance cascade that will enhance the vibrations and improve the sound. Ahemā¦

The fretboard is clamped on and drying, when I wiped the squeeze-out off a fair bit of the excess has ended up in the ends of some of the fret slots. Other than buying a fret slot saw does anyone have a cheap suggestion for clearing this up please? Iāve use Titebond original glue for this.
