Here's the start of build #002, a big blank sheet of paper. Still trying to decide what body shape to go for.

Looks good Robin, body shape is the tough bit, well after the headstock of course! And I’m only guitar number 1.

Give up the news folks, it’s liberating!

Started making sawdust today and am very happy to report that the router behaved itself today, no mishaps at all.

Hi Matt

This is a Bailey kit that I've got so the pickups and bridge are Wilkinson and the tuners are Gotoh. Ash body and maple neck.

I've made a little bit of progress, not a lot as its too cold to be out in the garage for long. The headstock is shaped and thicknessed, still going to plan so far.

Thank boo, it's a bit like opening a lucky bag when you cut the angle on the headstock, sometimes you're lucky.

Still trying to decide what body shape to go for.

It won’t be too long, and you’ll have done one of every shape that there is to do....

At least one ...

I’ve really come to like that Wilkinson bridge.  Good, solid, lump of metal, with the necessary intonation adjustment.  Like it.

The pickups, less so ...

When you fancy a trip down that particular rabbit hole, take a look at the Iron Gear website.  Ridiculously good VFM (made in China, but designed in UK and made to good QC standards).

Thats a rabbit hole that I'd be totally lost in. I'm not a player (I can only play enough to amuse myself), so the subtle differences in pickups are lost on me.

Don’t sell yourself short...

Yes, sometimes the differences can be rather subtle, imo most of the time they are not. But, it can be a rabbit hole so if you really don’t hear any difference and you’re happy with the sound of whatever you have then your wallet will be better off! 😆

Practice on scrap...

Another satisfying moment carving the vellute today. I watched the course video again last night, then followed Mark's instructions and the vellute miraculously appeared.

I've been putting fret wires in today, this has been the most awkward part of this build so far. The wire I bought wasn't pre bent, so I had to make roller. The roller I made wasn't great and as I had been warned, it was difficult to keep the fret wire from twisting. I found that by holding the end of the wire with vicegrips I could counter the twist. I'll be sure to buy pre curved fretwire next time.  Another top tip, mask off your nice light coloured maple neck while handling razor sharp snipped fretwires with frozen fingers, it keeps the blood stains off.
