Overall, it looks stunning, from a distance.

The back and sides are like a mirror and so is the front apart from the contaminated areas. I think I will have to do the front again, if I want it to be perfect. I may end up just  giving the whole thing a couple more coats in a couple of weeks or so. I will key the surface thoroughly and clean it to within an inch of it’s life before any more lacquer goes on. I will just try and bury those affected areas.

In these pictures you can see the reflection of Sky News in the guitar and the contaminated areas on the front.

That sounds like a plan... ?

Today I have flattened the lacquer down to P600 grade, I’ll probably finish with P800 before relacquering. I did the top and back today and got rid of most of the imperfections that I was worried about. In these pictures you can just see the problem areas but I am confident I can fill them in with more lacquer.

Hi, a little finishing trick that I have used for some years to fill annoying cracks or faults in show surfaces is the get some mitremate superglue and spray activator. Apply the glue in the offending area, spray and leave for a few minutes. Once hardened it can be rubbed down with very fine abrasive leaving a clear repair that can be lacquered over. Always try on an off cut first to make sure you are happy with it but it’s much quicker than trying to fill areas with just lacquer which can take 5 or 6 painstaking applications to achieve the same result

Thanks for the advice Darren, I use CA quite a lot for jobs like this so I am hoping the next application on clear coat will be perfect. I don’t used traditional nitro lacquer, I use 2k auto clear as it is catalysed and it is quicker and easier to build up the layers. This is all I have ever used as I used to be a paint sprayer in a car body shop. I want to learn about other finishing products and applications, I think Mark is planning a course for this subject.

Thanks Herb.

What’s next you say?

Well! Paul Gilbert is my guitar teacher and he has predominantly used Ibanez guitars during his career. At the moment he is currently using an Ibanez Fireman, which he helped design with Ibanez. It is almost a mirror image of an Ibanez Iceman with a few mods. You may have seen Paul Stanley from KISS use an Iceman but as far as I know only Paul Gilbert uses Fireman. So instead of buying one of his Ibanez endorsed guitars, I thought I would attempt to make one. They come in many colours and specs so I need to figure out all of that before I start cutting any wood. I have the majority of it figured out, I just need to decide what bridge and pickups to use.

The picture below is Paul Gilbert with an Ibanez Fireman.

Hahaha....... Yeah I do feel like that when I plug it in sometimes. Good days, bad days and all in between. Steady improvement, just like building guitars!

@boo Apologies if I’ve missed this detail somewhere… What pickups did you use for this build?

What pickups did you use for this build?

@abbbbbottttt Seymour Duncan Hot Rails Tele. They are dual blade humbucker pickups in single coil size for Tele. They are very nice indeed, good for rock music.
