@robin Great choice Robin. He is such a super star, what a master he is at this style of playing. I remember finding him a few years back and I couldn’t believe it, absolutely amazing. 👍

I’ve had an issue in the past with the connections on the selector switch failing. That seems to be a weak point for me, rather than solder on pots, etc. Posted by: @robin Connect your bridge puckup directly to the… Read more»

If it’s a Neapolitan bowl back type mandolin it probably is beyond repair. They are a nightmare and hardly ever play in tune. Good decorative pieces but that’s about it. -

You learn a ton about instruments by doing repair & tech work and it’s fun and rewarding but you need to keep a sharp lookout for the pitfalls which are lurking around the corners.Â
Have fun with the Mando @robin! -

@robin Good repair and I would say it will outlast you and me. I like the way you have made new rivet caps. I still can’t work out how they managed to rivet wood without crushing it. Superglue can be dangerous… Read more»

Good job, it looks like you have it sorted. I was surprised when you mentioned a truss rod as banjos don’t usually have one. -

Took the trussrod cover off the banjo and found solid headstock under it, just a pretend trussrod coverWhen you put it back together, could you use pretend strings?

@robin My preference would be to cut away some wood from where the bottom of the head butts against the neck and move the whole thing up, Â but there is a lot of string height to take up. Changing the… Read more»

@robin Can you post a photo of the banjo where the neck and body are joined. I’m thinking you might need to carve some wood from the neck to get it higher up and improve the action. Altering the neck… Read more»

@robin The string action sounds high and reasons for this could be: 1. the neck angle to the body is incorrect or the neck is set too high on the body. A lot of cheaper banjos are just badly made… Read more»

Posted by: @robin He’s also given me a banjo that needs a bit of attention, obviously I’ll not be asking advice on that as I’ve already anticipated the answer. As I don’t like to be too predictable, I thought I’d… Read more»

@robin If the plates are 1.5mm think then I would put some protection on the soundboard, like thick plastic and lever them off with a chisel. Old adhesive shouldn’t be that strong to resist very much. Words fail me for… Read more»
