Ive thought about doing things a different way, like doing a two wood headstock say rosewood and ebony instead of a plain one colour. Tried it once it worked ok.

Looks like a good start

I did try sanding sealer before cutting and it helped. This is a really cheap piece of wood soft and powdery. I’m sure it will be much better on a quality piece.
