I’ve still got a long way to go but these necks are starting to look good with their respective bodies. I’m going to use all gold hardware on both of them, I think it would be rude not to.Β

I’ve yet to carve them but I couldn’t resist offering them up to have a look how they might look. I like it so far.Β

I’ve had a couple of days off from guitar making to move some more stuff out of the house but I couldn’t resist carving the nut area into the headstock on one of these necks. I thought I would do the easy one first, these woods carved like butter. The other one could be a different story, I’ll do that tomorrow.Β

I had a pop at the other neck today. I’ve blended the nut area into the headstock and rounded all the corners over with various grades of sandpaper. The whole headstock is sanded to p320 grade now. This panga panga really does come up nice.Β

@swepri Yeah, go for it. I have chosen to make building guitars part of my life, I’m always doing something, whether it’s a full on build or customising an existing guitar. I’m toying with the idea of making some parts too, like control knobs, bridges, nuts, pickups etc. The more you weave it into your life, the more proficient you become and it’s just second nature from there on in.Β

The possibilities are endless, limited only by your imagination. I am always genuinely excited to see what I can come up with next and working my way towards designing something original and that stands out. I have cut my teeth on using industry standard guitar shapes but I think it’s time I come up with my own designs now. I’ve bought some extra special pickups recently so this is the time to step up and do something original, maybe unique.Β

Like anything, you get better with practice.Β

Keep going.Β

@swepri That’s what I’m here for. 😆Β

What wood is it?Β

@boo The fretboard is rosewood. I am planning to do a semi-hollowbody, loosely based on the Bandsman shape. The first build turned out very heavy, so why not try a variation with a thin top and some routing? Plenty of time to decide on the body, though. I'm starting with the neck, 24.75" scale.

@swepri Rosewood, classic. 👍

Nice idea with the semi hollow body, it’s on my list too. The only thing I’m worried about is if too much wood is taken out of the body (hollowness), whether the guitar would be too heavy and unbalanced, literally. It can obviously be done but it’s going to be a balancing act with how hollow the body is and how heavy the neck is. This would depend on types of woods used and size of body etc.Β

Good luck with it man. 👍

Yes, that is a concern. I'm not thinking full hollowbody, rather hollowing out the upper half (when held in playing position) and put some kind of nice f-hole there. Maybe some weight relief in the lower half too, but not all of it. I have a nice Ibanez AMF73BB built in a similar way.

I play some sloppy slide on that one in this video

Spent some time today carving the panga neck. This wood is surprisingly easy to work, I thought it was going to be much harder.Β
That’s the rough carving and sanding done, now I’ll move on to carving the heal and volute areas.Β

@clinton Yeah it’s one of my favourite parts too. Nice job with the T neck, it looks amazing, I like the figuring. Is it flame maple?Β

Good to see that red/gold body is still around - at least I'm presuming that it's the same one you were spraying, re-spraying, re-re-spraying, stripping-and-starting-over, spraying, re-spraying (bored yet?) many months ago??

As those fretboards complement the body designs nicely.Β  Clever design work Mr @Boo.
