At some point in the near future, I want to make a guitar from start to finish as fast as I can and see what happens (staying safe too though). I’ll start with a baseline of 1 week;
It depends on what you intend the finished guitar to look like.
You certainly can build a guitar, start to finish, in a week. Mark has taught complete numpties (I’m looking at myself here!) to do just that, many times.
And I’ve seen the man himself get a guitar built in a day.
So, for the non-Jedi but-still-experienced builders, I reckon 3-4 days should be do-able, assuming all the bits and templates are on hand, and nothing goes wrong.
Which would leave the remaining 3-4 days for the finishing. Is that do-able?

Yeah I think if I just do a simple oil finish, I could do one in a week. Like you said, so long as I had all my templates and tools all lined up, ready to go, I think I am on the way to achieving that.
If I was to choose a high gloss finish and not use nitro, I may be able to do it, just.

Thanks I would like some help sourcing a decent gun so I will check the spec on my compressor and see what it’s output is. I don’t need a large one, smaller the better. Price is not a problem.
Also some black nitro will be good ready mixed as I tried tinting clear to do a headstock repair last year and found it difficult to get the mix correct.
The body blank is basswood from Mark so it shouldn’t need too much grain filling.
Some people call me a tool, others are less complimentary. Tools being useful things.

That’d be something interesting to try.
Perhaps we could have some sort of challenge amongst ourselves; “what can you achieve in a week?”.
Pretty sure I wouldn’t have a solid week to join in though, at least not for about 11months!
Maybe every Saturday for 6 weeks, but I’d probably fail even that!

Finally I got all the paint defects sorted out and it’s back in black. Nitro goes on differently than other paints I am used to and as it dries, it becomes flatter, less orange peal. I may sand it a little after a day or two. I’ll get a couple more coats of black on before applying a few coats of matt clear to finish.

A black day for guitar making
@rocknroller912 Better than 50 shades of grey. 🤣

You had better stock up on green paint cause after COP26 in Glasgow the new colour will be 50 shades of green.
@rocknroller912 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Yeah maybe but I’m not so sure anything will change. With Johnson sat there like a slob, not at all interested, China not there, Russia not there, Sturgeon not allowed an official seat…… We don’t stand a chance, the world will devour the human race due to our arrogance, ignorance and greed…. all the things the bible warns against (not that I’m religious). The super rich control the world, money talks, and there is no interest from them to save it. The planet will be fine, it will have the final say, it’s been though worse. Sadly, humans, along with a large percentage of life will die off, the planet will reset itself, start a fresh (tabula rasa). When we are all eventually dead, money won’t mean anything. It’s time for humans to be eradicated and other intelligent life forms to evolve, we are not responsible custodians. In general, I don’t have any faith in humanity, although there are plenty of nice, intelligent people, there are also too many rich sociopaths to influence the masses of stupid and naive people to go along with their insidious agendas.
It’s doom and gloom isn’t it but that’s what I predict. I’m moving to Scotland to enjoy nature whilst I still can before I die. 🏴🏴🏴🏴💙🌍💚
Ill be dead by the time everything collapses but I fear for the future generations who will be left with a dying planet (in terms of being able to support complex life), with no hope of fixing it. The time fix it is now, I don’t believe we will change. I will go to my grave knowing that I supported saving life on Earth, whilst others voted to destroy it. If there is a god, hopefully he/she/it will recognise that in me.

It’s a bit of a tough question to answer, but I wonder how “life” on Earth in, say, a million years in the future, will look back on the time when human was the dominant life form on the planet.
I fear we’ll be viewed as some sort of infection that briefly afflicted the planet, ate it up, and left little of value behind. Such a clever, inventive species, with such a thirst for knowledge and capacity for learning.
That, ultimately, proved itself to be incredibly dumb.
Anyways, stop stalling @boo, and get that guitar finished.

@tv101 Yeah that’s how I view the human race, we’re a virus.

I agree, enough procrastination. 😁🎸

I have really messed up this paint job, I’m not used to using this nitro paint. I’ve missed my window for respraying it at the moment, I’ll probably have to wait for Spring. I have no climate control or heating of any kind in my workshop and even though the temperature is quite mild for the winter, the relative humidity is a constant 95%. Other than that, I’m nearly done. The paint was all going well until I put the matt clear on, I got something wrong and it’s left the finish a really weird orange peal/pitted looking matt finish. It not the look I was going for but it’s only on the body, the neck is fine.
So, I’ve got all the hardware screwed into place and I’m just about to start with the wiring. Only thing is, this pickup has this metal braiding, I’ve not used it before, how the hell do I wire it? Has anyone wired these before?
