Laminated necks just look great and, so long as you can get them glued up properly, are actually a great way of building very strong and stable necks from smaller sections of timber.
What a fantastic first build, awesome! -

I might even have a section of prototype or reject template that I can send you to use to align the holes. I’ll have a look tomorrow.

Hi Rocknroller, the template is 75mm wide (same as Stewmac templates) but it would need you drill holes in your existing jig to correspond to the position of rows of holes in my templates. Are you able to do this?

darrenking replied to the topic "Centre joining strip on laminated arched back?" – 4 years, 3 months ago
Hi James, yes, pretty good except that the crown cut diagram shows the cut going all the way to the middle of the log. It wouldn’t, as this central section would actually give two lots of quarter cut material, top… Read more»

Hi James, lots of veneers are available wide than this but in crown cut rather than quarter cut. What species are you looking for?

Hi James, I would glue the strip into to outer layer of veneer before laminating it if for no other reason than it’s quicker/easier than doing it afterwards. You may need to scrape the inlay strip flush with the surface… Read more»

Hi James, ha! You’ve missed off acoustic gypsy jazz guitars, discernible by their extra heightened soundboards, either with or without a pliage (crease) , floating bridges (as per cello etc) and strings attached to a tailpiece. Definitely a construction distinct… Read more»

darrenking replied to the topic "Wood dye UV fading" – 4 years, 3 months ago
Light colours, especially greys and blues are notoriously bad for fading. If you use one of these then try to make sure you have a UV rated lacquer to protect the stain underneath. I think this can also be boosted… Read more»

Beware of Stewmacs ‘free delivery’! HMRC will assess a value for the carriage of about £150 and charge you VAT, duty and admin costs on this. No getting around it, no discussion, no appeal. Pay it or face prosecution. I… Read more»
