@tej
What type of bridge do you have. If it has some intonation adjustment that should take care of any small changes after the neck is glued. -

@tej Thanks for asking, I’m still working on it. I had a router malfunction of course possibly due partly to operator error but partly not. I found that the centre pin on my Dremel circle cutter was very slack and… Read more»

Rocknroller912 replied to the topic "Finishing/gluing…and sanding" – 3 years, 9 months ago
@tej Martin guitars do all the neck and body finishing separately before fitting the two together, which is the only hand crafted process in the factory. It includes stain, lacquer and polishing. The neck/body glueing surfaces are masked off for… Read more»

@tej I found a good tip from a Canadian guitar maker on utube a while ago. He wraps abrasive paper round something soft like a sponge which preserves the original shape. I tried it and it works very well. On… Read more»

@tej I’ve been using various sizes of aerosol cans as sanding blocks for the curves. I did find it difficult to get it smooth inside the curves on my ash body, I get dips at the soft bits and bumps… Read more»

@Tej I use thin superglue and only add small drops – the drops vanish down the slot, usually by the time you get to the end of the fretboard you can go back to the start…..

Your carving is looking good. As for removing fingers, I’ve tried it and wouldn’t recommend it. -

@tej I have the same issue with one of my builds. the cutaway should be a lot lower. It is also difficult to balance on my lap because of the weird curve at the bottom of the lower horn. It… Read more»

Rocknroller912 replied to the topic "Neck pocket alignment" – 3 years, 10 months ago
@tej I wouldn’t worry about 0.5mm as long as all 6 strings line up with the pick up pole pieces. To make a thin shim start with a bit longer than you need and clamp it down. Mark the size… Read more»

That sounds like a plan @tej , carve off a bit at a time until it looks and feels right. The real skill is to stop before you take too much, because you can’t put it back on so easily.

@tej My current buid isn’t a bandsman, but is a similar shape. With the belly carve I’ve gone to almost half the body thickness. I hadn’t intended carving so much out, but I was trying to get rid of a… Read more»

Its always difficult making a one off design because a lot of time is spent refining the process then it’s never used again. -
Rocknroller912 replied to the topic "In the beginning we mark the nut…" – 3 years, 10 months ago
@tej I get your idea now. I usually align the neck with a straight edge along each side of the neck and make a pencil mark on the body from the outside of the straight edge. Then I measure the… Read more»

Rocknroller912 replied to the topic "In the beginning we mark the nut…" – 3 years, 10 months ago
@tej looks like you are getting the hang of guitar building now, making your own jigs. In the past I’ve used a neck template that was slightly bigger than the pocket template so it doesn’t quite fit in. This allows… Read more»
