Now you just need a license to paint it in Vantablack

@jonhodgson I don’t think Vantablack is robust enough to use on a guitar from what I’ve read. It’s ok for household object, lamps etc that aren’t going to be constantly handled but not for an instrument. I’m waiting for a paint material that is as black as Vanta but super hard wearing, then we’ll be good to go. 🖤

@boo I think the hundreds of thousands you have to pay to get a license to use Vanta Black (not to mention that it has some very special application method) probably makes how hard wearing it is rather moot.

I think the blackest pigment in the normal sense is probably Culture Hustle's Black 3.0, but that isn't very hard wearing. You can mix it into resin apparently, but then it's not matt (but does make for a very black gloss).

So what we need is the Black 3.0 pigment but some hard wearing matt base that is compatible.

@boo yeah but it’d look awesome until manhandled though 🙂

@tej It would look stunning, I must admit. It would be torture knowing I couldn’t play it though.

Fretboard and parts. Lovely Ebony fretboard from Mark @markbailey and I love Gotoh hardware in Cosmo Black.

Yeah or Nay? Do you think there is any reason why this material couldn’t be used to make fret marker dots?

Bright yellow inlays don’t exist, I’ve looked everywhere and asked around. I am thinking of using these rods to use for the front of the fretboard. I may have to put one in my small lathe and reduce the size before cutting some dots from it.

What do you think?

Any other suggestions?

If you have a nice sharp saw @boo I imagine that you could use this very effectively. I might nick this idea myself one day.

@mattbeels Erm, I was thinking 9.5mm is a bit big for fretboard dots or is it acceptable? Not sure.

@jonhodgson Ah yeah but look what happens when you put a couple of 6mm rods at 600mm in length into your basket and try and purchase them. Thanks for looking Jon, I appreciate it but I looked at this company first but was put off by the surcharge. 😳😬😧

@boo that's a bit cheeky!

No surcharge with these guys, but there is a £12 minimum order

@boo I don’t see why not, should look good. With regard to size look at how wide your fret wire is and what gap you have on 21st and 23rd fret (if you have the latter) as pushing the diameter might look scrappy if it’s right up to the fret edge.

@jonhodgson That’s great, thanks for the link, I’ve ordered from them. I made up the order with a few different colours to get it to the minimum order. It’s a good shop, they do some interesting stuff. Cheers, much appreciated. 👍

Did a little bit more on this neck today. Drilled the tuner holes and rough cut the headstock. Installed the truss rod and glued the fillet in. Test fitted a couple of tuners and had to put the neck back in a jig to route off another mm so these low profile, short post tuners will fit. @russ

@boo coming along nicely, hoping to be at a similar stage by the end of today too if the stars align and I get time!

Good choice on the tuners @boo, I love locking tuners and the low profile posts are a big reason why. 👍
